I'm not sure how closely related to foxes they are, though, as they have their own genus and species (but are in Canidae family) and cannot interbreed with other members of the Canidae family.. but, apparently, some authorities have placed it with various South American Foxes (like, considered it to be one of them). They've also been refered to as 'the fox on stilts', which I think is at least an accurate description of their appearance, if nothing else.
It's behavioral habits are more like foxes than wolves (it's not a pack animal, for one thing.)
